“For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”” – 1 Corinthians 1:26-31 (ESV)
God doesn’t restrict His calling to deliver the gospel message to those of stature; the scholarly, the wise or the influential. For the Lord knows our hearts, and joyfully shines through all those who seek to glorify Him, and not themselves.

God’s ways are so contrary to the thinking of this world. It’s not because of our qualifications that we were chosen, but because of His great love.

I am with Jenifer, I am thankful that He doesn’t restrict His calling because I would never be called. He calls the weak to lead the strong, the least likely to do great things. If we are to boast of anything it is to boast of our Lord Jesus Christ and wonderful things He has done.

I seriously take great comfort in knowing that God called a donkey to get His message out (Numbers 22). It reassures me that when He calls on me to witness (which he calls every believer to do), He will give the words.

Jesus was a man of no reputation in a status-obsessed society. Even his disciples imagined that God’s economy worked like the systems of this world when they were discussing which of them was the greatest. After hearing their debate He sits them down and sets them straight. “If you want to be first, then be the last of all and the servant of all.” So everything in God’s paradigm is a paradox and the direct opposite of what the world deems of value. He chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and the weak things of the world to shame the strong. Yes indeed.
