Last week, Shannon and I were digging through our basement in search of items to sell at the community yard sale, when we came across a box we hadn’t seen before. It really didn’t shock me that there were boxes we hadn’t opened down there, as after my mother and grandfather passed away, the contents of both houses were packed up and split between my brother Chris and I. Shortly thereafter, Shannon and I moved and the untouched containers moved as well.
Anyways, we opened the box and were presented with a number of items which had obviously come from my grandfather’s house. At first glance, there didn’t seem to be anything of specific note, until we found a small cloth bag nestled in with some old silverware. Inside the bag we found around 25 pieces of broken, tarnished spoons and forks lovingly wrapped and put aside. The patterns and styles of the pieces were varied, they were worn and damaged, and none of them seemed to fit together in any way but for some reason they had been segregated from the rest and carefully put aside all the same. As we looked over them in greater detail, we realized that they all had one thing in common; they were all marked “Sterling”.
A quick Internet lookup confirmed our suspicion; those broken, worn, tarnished pieces were hidden treasure. 🙂
Early this week I made some phone calls, and found a local metals dealer who gave us an excellent price for the pieces. As this has been a financially difficult year, this was a truly amazing Blessing to us and came at the perfect time.
Then tonight Father, I realized the parallel in this story…
By ourselves we’re broken, and tarnished, and damaged and yet, through Your Grace we’re made precious, and wanted and valuable. Like my grandfather did with those unwanted spoons, You see beyond our outward appearance and brokenness and nurture the hidden treasures inside us.
Heavenly Father, I thank You for the Blessings You Grace us with each day. Although we are truly undeserving, through Your Mercy we’re drawn into Your Embrace and made whole. I pray that, even if only for a moment, we’re able to see ourselves through Your Eyes and find that Hidden Treasure that You have placed inside each of us. Amen.

And thank you for asking about Brandy as well. The vet indicated she has quite a few issues including arthritis, collapsed discs, a heart murmur, early kidney disease, slight anemia and a urinary tract infection, but with all of that being the case she still seemed remarkably well! She gave me some pain medication to help with the discomfort of the arthritis, and antibiotics for the infection and sent her home with me. 🙂 She’s a tough old dog!

What a neat story and reminder how God does love to surprise us. I was spring cleaning last weekend and found a tiny statue that belonged to a set I inherited from my great Aunt and had lost years ago. I couldn’t believe I found it after all this time and just knew God knew the right time to bless me with this unexpected shower of His love.
Isn’t it amazing the ways He finds to show His Caring for us Jean? 🙂 It’s those little things that many take for granted as chance each day that I’ve been trying to remember to thank Him for each day.

God’s timing is always perfect, isn’t it? He blessed you twice here. Once with the financial gift of the sterling silver. And He gave you a beautiful picture of His Amazing Grace. I love that He looks beyond my outward appearance and sees through to my heart. He knows what I can become when I submit to His Loving Hands. Grace seems to be topic on hearts this week. You wrote about it, I just wrote about it and Debi did too for Woman to Woman. 🙂

Hi Phil,
How true…there are so many people who see themselves as unworthy of God’s love (tarnished by life, worthy of the dumpster of life). I am teaching a series of spiritual gifts and you would be amazed at how many people thought (at the beginning) that they had no gifts of value – nothing to offer! Clearly Scripture says that each believer has at least one spiritual gift. It is wonderful for me to watch people as they discover how God has gifted them for ministry. Thanks for sharing about the Hidden Treasure that is within each of us.
Thank you Kris, and welcome! I’ll admit that there have certainly been times in my life that I felt unworthy of God’s Love, but thankfully He never saw me that way. 🙂 The closer we walk in His Presence, the more apparent our gifts become both to us, and to those around us.
