Don’t Do As the Hypocrites Do

“Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven. When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get. But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.” – Matthew 6:1-4 (NLT)

Acts of truly selfless giving aren’t done in the public eye, but instead are performed with no thought as to recognition or recompense.  God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7), and the knowledge that our gifts of service and charity please Him and glorify His presence in our lives are the only reward that actually matters.

Come Boldly…

“So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” – Hebrews 4:14-16 (NLT)

While it may seem unnatural to come “boldly” to the Creator of all, that’s exactly how God desires we approach Him; certainly not from a position of arrogance or entitlement, but instead completely confident in His infinite love for us and knowing that He would move Heaven and Earth to come to our aid.

As He Loves Us

“So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” – John 13:34-35 (NLT)

In this commandment to His disciples, Jesus directs us to employ a more intense kind of love in our relationships with one another; one based on a standard higher than love of ourselves…

Love one another as He loves us.

For when the world sees us reaching out to one another in truly pure, selfless, and practical examples of the love Jesus fills us with, there can be no doubt as to it’s source.

We All Have Scars

We all have scars.

Some are obvious…

However many of our most painful wounds are suffered unseen by those around us.

Jesus however, sees all our scars…

Knows our hurt…

And feels our pain.

And in the midst of our struggles, our anguish and our uncertainties…

He bids us come to Him, that we may be comforted…

And healed…

And know His amazing love for us.

For in the tender presence of our Savior…

We don’t have to hide our scars.

Thank You Lord.

Extensions of His Love

Today’s entry in the “Joyce Meyer: Promises for Your Everyday Life” devotional reading plan I’m following made a powerful point about finding meaning and fulfillment, and where we should really be seeking it…

“Love is the energy of life. It’s what motivates people to get up each day and keep going. It gives life purpose and meaning.People often have times in their lives when they believe they are unloved or have no one to love. They develop this mindset because they are looking for fulfillment in ways that seem good at first but often leave them feeling frustrated, disappointed and empty inside.Does this ever happen to you? Do you ever look for love and end up feeling unfulfilled? Let me ask you this: What kind of love are you pursuing? You may be looking for love, but really, you’re looking for God, because He is love. Any love you gain that is disconnected from God is not really love and will leave you feeling unfulfilled.…”

When we seek love, in effect we’re truly desiring the source of all love; God.  When we keep Him at the center of our lives, that overwhelming love flows through us and allows our other relationships to truly be as He intends them to…

As extensions of His love for us.
